Basically there are two types of grinding/polishing machine. The 'traditional' type which involves the mirror rotating at a relatively slow speed, a few rpm for a big mirror (16-20 inches) with the tool moving across the mirror, from side to side, at a higher rpm depending on the size of the mirror and/or tool.

Here is a photo of the grinder in operation actually edging a 12.5 inch blank I cast in my kiln. It works! The blank is attached to the 12 inch diameter wood disk with industrial strength, adhesive-backed Velcro. The rough grinding drum very quickly got the edge trued up and round and to the correct diameter with a minimum of effort and drama.

July 22, 2003 Machine settings - Platter set at 15rpm - Overarm speed - 6 strokes per min (fixed), Stroke+/- 2.375". aprox 10 lbs weight on mirror. Started at 6:10pm using 60grit SiC. Applied grit at aprox 5min intervals. using shaker for grit and water in spray bottle.
