I own the Grizzly G8689, which is your garden variety mini-mill. It's about as small as I would really like to go for any serious 1911 work. By the time you add a good-sized vise, you're running up against the table travel limitations more often than not. It's massive enough to cut things like Novak dovetails, but only just, in my opinion.

Grizzly G8689 mini-mill motor controller repair. While experimenting with my G8689 CNC conversion, I allowed a grounded wire to come into contact with terminal 7 of the G8689 motor controller. The fuse was blown and the controller was damaged. LMS sells these as their part number 1211. Since LMS was out of stock I went ahead and fixed mine.

The typical Sieg X2 mini-mill [HF 44991, Grizzly G8689, Micro-Mark & others] has a lot of backlash in the Z-axis.In my case it was .053-inches, which was almost a full turn of the fine-adjust knob. I heard that putting a shim behind the rack on the column would help by causing it to mesh tighter with the pinion gear in the head.
