I did at least 250 knives on the angle grinder machine, and many thousands on the 2x72 version. The 2x72 version was actually more dangerous than the angle grinder version. It only works for scandi-type bevels that have a fairly wide flat section on the blade. It also only works blades without any recurve sections.

Constant grinding on the bevel heats up the entire bevel. When the damaged tip get heated, the heat has no place to go - especially when the rest of the bevel is heated up too. Even with a cool wheel, this will be a problem. The solution to this problem is simple. We first level up the tool rest and grind the chisel end square past the damage.

For the longer blades I really like the push stick and work rest method. You will gradually learn to feel the angle and grind. I still do mistakes but usually I have room to make them better. One thing that helped me a lot is to learn to feel the the angle and bevel before I push into the belt and remove material.

For most of the lathe tools, you find the bevel angle and then adjust the tool rest accordingly. To do this, you mark the middle of the bevel with a marker, then touch the tool to the grinding wheel. Use your hand to turn the wheel while also adjusting the angle. When the ink is erased from the bevel, you have found the right angle.

I rough grind free hand with no tool rest usually. Sometimes I will use the tool rest to rest my hands on and help steady them while grinding. I start more towards the tip and work my way back into the plunge. After heat treat (carbon steel) then I switch to a minimal contact rest that greatly reduces friction pulling blade across belt.

Awesome tool rest! The Wolverine rest is, IMO, a must for woodworkers that use a bench grinder to establish primary bevels on planes and chisels. The large thick plate acts as a heat sink and locks solid making the process quick and accurate. satisfied and worth every penny! Looking forward to adding a 6" cbn wheel to finish off the system!

As pointed out by Leonard Lee in his sharpening book, and shown in this drawing, a grinding wheel leaves an arc-shaped bevel - with the actual angle at the edge less than the tool rest angle. This drawing shows the shape of the bevel when you use a 6" grinding wheel on a standard plane blade (0.09" thick).

I would also suggest not trying to get perfect pre heat treat grinds, I almost always grind the entire bevel after heat treat unless the blade is at least 3/16 ...

The Veritas Grinder Tool Rest can be used with 6" or 8" utility bench grinders and many belt sanders/grinders. Some of the best use a work rest with great results, others grind freehand with equally great results, there are many ways to put a bevel on a blade. Here is the latest blade on the road to freehand grinding. Using 3/16" mild steel. Started with a worn 36grit belt to cut in the 45s. Next, I used a fresh 60grit belt to bring my grinds about 90% of the way to my marked bevel line. Finally, I used a fresh 120grit belt to bring the grind lines up to my marked bevel line.
