You are now ready to set your tool rest as shown in Figure 2. Honing Once the bevel is hollow ground on a blade, you will need to go through the honing grits to finish the edge.
اقرأ أكثر- The grind angle chart; Fred Rowe posted it up last week on one of the threads here. You look up the material thickness, and how wide you want the bevel, and it tells you the correct grind angle. So I set the bubble jig for that, and grind on. I like a convex edge myself, so I put my secondary bevels on with a slack belt (no platen) and ...
اقرأ أكثرI did at least 250 knives on the angle grinder machine, and many thousands on the 2x72 version. The 2x72 version was actually more dangerous than the angle grinder version. It only works for scandi-type bevels that have a fairly wide flat section on the blade. It also only works blades without any recurve sections.

اقرأ أكثرConstant grinding on the bevel heats up the entire bevel. When the damaged tip get heated, the heat has no place to go - especially when the rest of the bevel is heated up too. Even with a cool wheel, this will be a problem. The solution to this problem is simple. We first level up the tool rest and grind the chisel end square past the damage.
اقرأ أكثرThe Adjustable Replacement Tool Rest Sharpening Jig will allow you to locate all the basic sharpening positions with your bench grinder (grinder not included). The unique miter slide tool holder design allows the jig to be used more or less as a stone, which easily guides your blades, turning tools and chisels.
اقرأ أكثرFor the longer blades I really like the push stick and work rest method. You will gradually learn to feel the angle and grind. I still do mistakes but usually I have room to make them better. One thing that helped me a lot is to learn to feel the the angle and bevel before I push into the belt and remove material.
اقرأ أكثرFor most of the lathe tools, you find the bevel angle and then adjust the tool rest accordingly. To do this, you mark the middle of the bevel with a marker, then touch the tool to the grinding wheel. Use your hand to turn the wheel while also adjusting the angle. When the ink is erased from the bevel, you have found the right angle.

اقرأ أكثرAfter hardening, the blade smith hand holds the blade, resting the pre-established bevel directly onto the belt grinders platen or contact wheel. Besides the purchase of a 2x72 grinder, the tilt table would be our best recommendation for blades smiths looking to make the most significant improvement in the quality of the bevels they grind.
اقرأ أكثرI rough grind free hand with no tool rest usually. Sometimes I will use the tool rest to rest my hands on and help steady them while grinding. I start more towards the tip and work my way back into the plunge. After heat treat (carbon steel) then I switch to a minimal contact rest that greatly reduces friction pulling blade across belt.

اقرأ أكثرAwesome tool rest! The Wolverine rest is, IMO, a must for woodworkers that use a bench grinder to establish primary bevels on planes and chisels. The large thick plate acts as a heat sink and locks solid making the process quick and accurate. satisfied and worth every penny! Looking forward to adding a 6" cbn wheel to finish off the system!
اقرأ أكثرAs pointed out by Leonard Lee in his sharpening book, and shown in this drawing, a grinding wheel leaves an arc-shaped bevel - with the actual angle at the edge less than the tool rest angle. This drawing shows the shape of the bevel when you use a 6" grinding wheel on a standard plane blade (0.09" thick).

It mounts directly to the bench in front of the grinder and can be readily folded out of the way for freehand grinding. The 4" wide table straddles wheels up to 1" wide. It is grooved for sliding jigs and center drilled for rotating jigs.

اقرأ أكثرThis type of bevel is often used for chef and kitchen knives. As with all bevels, start by scribing the railroad track center lines on the edge of the blade. Next, using a 90-degree work table, rest the spine of the knife on the table. Use a coarse grit belt to remove the majority of the material.
