While I was in the construction process of the Mirror-O-Matic I had ordered a 10" an 8" plate glass kit. Here is the 10" ready for fine grinding. The only part I could not find locally was the toggle pad used in the overarm assembly. This part I ordered from Reid Tool Supply Company. The 8" came at a later time then the 10".

Re: Building a fixed post mirror grinding machine. I I had a nice piece of 3/4" stainless dowel that was begging to be used. So I bought a cheap pillow block to provide the locator for the metal dowel, and then drilled the overarm to fit. These pillow blocks are $8 and come complete with a locking collar - great deal.

I have made three workable mirrors in the 20+ size. Two 22" ers of f5.36 and f5.23 and a 25" f4.68. I have to say that the big problems are mount related "astigmatism" and "potato chipping". These effects are difficult to control in the telescope when in use, more so as mirror diameter increases. Currently I have the 25" mirror in the scope.

I'm talking multiple primaries, not folded scopes. I KNOW that mirror focal lengths must be matched, and there are BIG collimation headaches, and that mirrors off axis have coma probs (Long focal length may not be so bad), but I can get 4 or 5 finished 6" mirrors for less than a 12" mirror grinding kit.

Re: Building a fixed post mirror grinding machine. Update summary: Lots of work to get to this point. Things I need to probably change or fix: My gearing of the DC motor. I will need a slow speed for polishing (5 rpm), and faster speeds for hogging out and fine grinding (15- 30 rpm), so likely need to think about adding a gear reduction.
