The grinders I have looked at are about $60.00 and then you add the variable speed unit and it is over $100 plus shipping. Im not sure, but I'd guess this has to do with some limit of the motor. Having something that spins at 500 rpm seems like it would need a gear reduction. The option of lowering the voltage to lower the speed doesn't seem like it would work, since as voltage decreases, current goes up rather quickly.

I remember oogling an inexpensive 8" low speed grinder at woodcraft. But while it seems its 1700rpm motor would be half as fast as my current 6" 3400rpm grinder, the reality is the 8" grinder's surface speed is only about a third slower. Just for sake of reference, my 20" grinder is 10 times slower than the 8" 1720rpm.

The best way to do it is to find a small, used VFD (variable frequency drive). You route the grinder or whatever tool you like through the VFD. You can use the controls on the VFD to slow it to a crawl. It may take some searching since VFDs can be hard to find, but for motors less than 1hp, you can sometimes find them cheap.

The 3500RPM motor will have less HP (Nm) than the same size 1750RPM motor. The low speed power of the 1750 is also a big advantage for us slower speed grinders who grind after HT ( 50% less power from a 3500RPM motor).
