The fine sand is the first layer (~3") and the top layer is the crushed coral. I had the fine sand first but my Tunzes keep blowing them away.. so I put a crushed coral layer on top and it stayed like that.

Inversly i absolutly love fine sand. They both do the same thing for pH and *hardness*. (I might be wrong abou that one.) But the crused coral offers more surface area for the water to pass over. A bad thing i've "heard" about fine sand though is that can be pockets created that harbor nitrates and such.

The finer sand is okay in the mix, but the crushed coral will allow the jawifsh to construct a more solid enterance to its burrow. Both the crushed coral and arragonite mix would work well. They do not need to be mixed completely but a few larger pieces of crushed coral will definately please your new jawfish.
