LV planes don't come with 300 dollar baldes that one feels a heel to rough with a grinder (and that is no disrespect to what they come with). Shapton 1k is a great stone, it is what I primarily use now. The first stone I started on is the naniwa (non-professional) 1k/3k combination, which I can vouch for as a solid starting point. I do prefer the shapton now, for the same reasons others have already stated.
